If you know my family then you know tailgating is our thing! No matter if it’s the Spring Game or the Biggest Game of the Season we are usually somewhere (at a family member’s house) having a get-together all in the name of football. There are also times when a big game comes on during the week and we have a great time together at home (my husband, kids, and I)! My son is usually running around the house with his football helmet on and a football in hand imitating everything he sees on TV…
If you have ever been tailgating in Ohio, or better yet Cleveland, OH then you may know about the Polish Boy!
What is a Polish Boy?
A Polish Boy is a sausage sandwich that originated in Cleveland, Ohio. It consists of a link of smoked sausage placed in a bun and covered with a layer of french fries, a layer of barbecue sauce or hot sauce, and a layer of coleslaw. If you are ever in the area, you can’t leave the city without having a good Polish Boy! Your life will forever be changed!
As the football season gets started I thought I would try my hand at making polish boys at home! My family loves them, and from time to time we purchase them. I love being able to make them at home!
I made our Polish Boys with Eckrich® Smoked Sausage that I found at Giant Eagle. Since I knew my family would eat more than one I purchased the family size Polska Kielbasa Natural Casing Smoked Sausage Rope. I started by browning the smoked sausage on both sides, we like them a little burnt on both sides so I did this in a skillet. It can be done via skillet or grill…
I also prepared french fries and cole slaw, this is the heart of the Polish Boy! My husband doesn’t like coleslaw so I usually create a Polish Boy Bar so if there is any part of the sandwich that you do not like you don’t have to add it to your sandwich.
You start with French Fries and you add the layers on, the bigger the better!
Next, you add coleslaw and barbeque sauce to finish the sandwich off!
I also stock up on Dr. Pepper® because it is the official drink of college football fans! The football design on the cans also matched perfectly with my football decor!
Giant Eagle is always my go-to when planning a Football Tailgating party, it’s not too far from where I live, I can always get everything in one location!
