Planning for the burial of your child is one of the hardest, if not the hardest thing I have EVER had to do in all my 31 years of life! It’s something you don’t think of because it’s just NOT supposed to happen that way…
But life can change in an INSTANT!
Last year on December 14, 2014 our lives were forever changed when our son passed away. Earlier that week we were told by a team of doctors that our son’s heart wasn’t strong enough to withstand surgery and he wasn’t going to make it. That was the first of many hard days on this journey. Honestly, Darrick and I didn’t even understand how to process that information, we just sobbed in the doctors office….
Our hearts were extremely heavy so instead of sitting in the room with our son crying we decided to leave that night, and come back the next day to visit. However, a few days Darrick II had a very hard night and basically had a heart attack, so we were left that day with the decision of calling the family in and taking him off all machines so he was no longer suffering…
While the doctors and nurses were making him comfortable…we were faced with the tough questions of what to do with him once he passed away. Do we want to have a Funeral/Memorial Service and a Burial or did we want the hospital to take care of the process. Since our family has close ties to one of the local Funeral Homes we knew we wanted to send him there, but still the thought of paying for the process never crossed my mind (I mean my son had just passed away…I wasn’t in my right mind)…
The next day my husband contacted his job and told them what happened and it was explained to us that we had life insurance on him, so everything would be taken care of once we made arrangements with the funeral home.
With September being National Life Insurance Month…Protective Life is here to help those who don’t understand the Life Insurance process navigate through the process. When “Life” happens the last thing you want to think about is is their is a life insurance policy…protect your family in advance. We were already in a VERY stressful situation and on top of that to have to think about paying the funeral home would have added additional stress. Im so glad that during the Open-Enrollment period at my husband’s job that we took out life insurance on our children as well as ourselves.
Having gone through this experience, we will always make sure our family is covered!
