Have you ever attended a meeting, conference or panel discussion and notice there aren’t many women present or speaking? Honestly, I have paid attention in the past, but with everything going on currently in our society its hard not to currently pay attention, and have some feelings about women not being apart of the “conversation”!
As many of you know, when I am not blogging I work in Higher Education. I have worked in Higher Education for the last 11 years, and I have many changes in leadership throughout years. Even most recently in the office I work in there has been a change in leadership from man to woman and our office has seen tremendous change, and change that we didn’t even realize we needed! It’s truly been amazing! And its also sparked a motivation in me to do more, and be more as a woman working in Higher Education!
Over the last month, I have had the pleasure of trying out the GenderAvenger Tally App. And I can’t wait to share all of my thoughts but first…
Have You Ever Heard of GenderAvenger?
GenderAvenger is a nonpartisan community dedicated to ensuring women are always part of the public dialog and the GA Tally lets you record and share the gender (im)balance you see every day. Whether it’s on TV, at a conference, or on a magazine cover, the GA Tally makes it easy to hold decision-makers accountable either by counting the number of women (including women of color) and men present, or track and share who is dominating the conversation.
How to use the GenderAvenger Tally App?
Using the GenderAvenger Tally App over the last month has been very educational and insightful! I mostly used it at work during different meetings. What was amazing is that at my job women are well represented, however, in those numbers, there could’ve been more representation from women of color!
I also started using the app in places that I attend on a regular basis; church, waiting at the pharmacy, sitting in a presentation at my daughters’ school, even in a classroom party on Halloween! At the end of last week, my husband and went to vote early and tallied the workers that were helping the voters.
Honestly, the results were very intriguing and sparked lots of conversations between my husband and I, especially when the men heavily outweighed the women when we have been together. It was interesting to hear his opinion of why he thought there were more men present or speaking, compared to my own thoughts of why there were more men present or speaking versus the women.
Interested in trying the GenderAvenger Tally App for yourself!!!
You should definitely try it, I promise you the results will surprise you, and definitely will spark LOTS of conversation!
