Smarty Locks and the Unforgettable Zoo
Written By Marilyn Harary and Illustrated By Janette Louden
Reading at bedtime is something that my children absolutely love! Well, I should say Emma loves it and DJ is learning to love it. He’s a little younger so I expect his attention to be on and off with reading right now. Emma LOVED Smarty Locks and the Unforgettable Zoo.
“Smarty Locks was so excited for her class trip to the zoo. However, when the day finally arrives there seems to be a change of plans. Despite her disappointment, Smarty Locks discovers a clever way to still have the incredible day she hoped for.”
I think she loved it so much because it related to animals and school, and Emma loves school so she was sold. The pictures were bright and bold, and that captured both of their attention! Emma is not formally reading, however, that doesn’t stop her from “reading” the book in her own way! I love to see how she describes the pictures as she looks through them. I usually act as if I am not paying any attention to her and talks about the entire story in her own words!
What I loved about Smarty Locks is that it teaches children the lesson that even if things don’t go your way, you can still have a great time! You may be disappointed in the beginning but things can always turn around. This lesson is more relatable to children than your average fairy tale ending, and that is what truly made me love this book!
The illustrations are amazing! As a parent, I loved the diverse classmates, and I loved Smarty Locks BIG hair! We embrace big hair and curls so I could tell Emma loved her hair and I loved Smarty Locks for this same reason!
