Happy Earth Day well Belated Earth Day since it was Saturday!
Earth Day is a holiday to think about the earth we live on, and what we can do to take care of it better. Teaching these ideas to the children who will be the future of our planet is very important. It’s never too early (or too late) to start doing this and Earth Day gives us a great jumping off point for the conversation.
Here are three ways kids can celebrate Earth Day:
- Read and watch The Lorax by Dr. Seuss – Afterward, spend some time talking to your children about what you watched and read. What is the moral of the story? What can we do in our daily lives to help the planet, as inspired by The Lorax? These are great conversations to start having, even with very young children.
- Clean up the neighborhood – Don some gloves and old clothes and go pick up trash in your neighborhood or clean up a favorite playground.
- Learn about recycling – If you’re already recycling in your home, this could be a great day to reinforce those ideas of how and why we recycle. If you’re not, it can be a great time to start. If your child is familiar with recycling already, maybe use Earth Day as a chance to look for a new way to recycle, or something new they can recycle or reuse that they have been previously skipping.
These are just a few ideas for celebrating Earth Day, but these ideas can be done year around! Encourage your children to do these things daily and not just for Earth Day!!!
