Making New Year’s resolutions as parents is a bit of a novel idea but a good one. Why not make your resolutions about something worthwhile and wonderful? Being a great parent benefits everyone!
Here are four parenting New Year’s resolutions that you might consider this holiday season:
Learn to Be a Bit More Patient
If you really want to improve your parenting skills, improving your patience is a great place to start. Children can be maddening at times and it is very easy to lose our cool as parents. Every expert in child care will say that remaining calm and under control is the key to great parenting.
Spend More Time with Your Child
No matter how old your children are, they will benefit greatly from you being around more. Why not commit to and schedule more time with your kids throughout the coming season and year? Perhaps you could plan on an extra vacation or regular weekly activity.
Commit to Listening More
If we listen to our children, we are far more likely to be tuned in to what is going on in their lives. We will also gain great respect for them and from them. It is easy to forget how difficult it can be to be a kid. The troubles are different, but no less powerful. A careful, listening ear is vital to being a fantastic parent and makes for a fantastic New Year’s resolution.
Commit to Attending Special Events
Most parents do a pretty good job of being present around the house, but some struggle mightily with attending special events at school. From PTA meetings to plays, sporting events and club meetings, attending every school function can feel impossible. Make a fresh commitment to do better in the coming year.
