Preparing for Family Road-Trips with Busy Books

When I think back to my childhood road-trips are high on my list of some of my favorites memories!  And now having children my husband and I would like to give those same experiences to my  children. There is so much to see while you are on the road, so many landmarks that you wouldn’t be able to see if you are in an airplane. Now there is nothing wrong with flying places but I guess if I had to choose I would definitely pick a road-trip.
I would also pick a road-trip because of the time that you get to spend with your family. To this day we still laugh at crazy things that we would do to have fun while on the road, or things we did when we got “stir-crazy”
I remember before we would go on a trip, my mother would go to the store to make the “big-run” this trip would be the one when she stocked up on snacks for the car, toiletries and any missing items that you may need for the trip; like any missing parts of one of your outfits, or pajamas, socks or stockings. Necessities that you didn’t necessarily want to spend time on your trip trying to find to buy.

Now, prior to going on trips I love the fact that I can do everything in one location with Walmart! From Clothes and Groceries to getting an oil change for the car…everything can be done in one location! This is especially helpful for families!!! Prior to going on trips I have even sent my husband shopping in Walmart while I stopped in to get a mani/pedi before taking a trip, especially if we are strapped for time (this was prior to children)!

However, now with having my own children and only being home part-time I have to utilize my time smartly! I am all about going to stores that are a “one-stop” shop…I am usually at Walmart bright and early to drop the car off and then I proceed to do all of my shopping!

My children are younger so usually I pick up snacks and prepare their “Car Bags” for the road. I know you are probably wondering what a Car Bag is…it is their own personal backpack with their belongings (i.e. toys) and a book that I put in a few items to keep them busy while on the road. In their car bags I usually create a Busy Book to keep them busy if they start to get restless…

Plastic Pencil Case with Zipper (I like the ones that are binder ready)

Items your child likes…Mine are very serious about coloring and stickers so this is what I included in their books. However, you can use whatever you like for this portion of the book.

Busy Books will keep my children busy…if nothing else they are excited about the new items that they have never seen before. Sometimes I replace the items with some of their favorite items from home!
So if you are getting on the road this holiday season, creating a busy book for your child is a great way to keep your kids busy while on the road! Also make sure you stop at Walmart for all of your “Road-Trip Needs”…
